Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. We observe MLK Day to reflect on his principles of non-violent social change and racial equality. Although we may have the day of school and work, and we encourage you to stay “on” and take the day to serve others in honor of Dr. King. Here are some ways you can serve others in our community:

• Adopt-a-drain in our neighborhood, or clean up litter at a local park.
• Create art for Newcastle’s Free Little Art Gallery.
• Donate books and media to Friends of Newcastle Library.
• Bring food to a local food bank.
• Teach your children about the life of Dr. King and reflect on his principles.
